From Tallinn to Narva and HelsinkiEstonia may be one of Europe’s smaller countries, but it offers an incredible variety of landscapes, historic towns, coastal areas, forests, and cultural experiences. What makes Estonia particularly appealing for a road trip is the feeling of space and tranquility. Outside the larger cities, the roads are often quiet, nature feels close, and it is easy to discover places that are still relatively untouched by mass tourism. Our journey took us from the medieval streets of Tallinn along the western coast, through the university city of Tartu, across the landscapes surrounding Lake Peipus, and finally to Narva near the Russian border. We also spent time on the Baltic coast and made a day trip to Helsinki. Looking back, the combination of culture, history, nature, and seaside relaxation made this road trip one of our most memorable journeys. Tallinn We started our road trip in the capital Tallinn, a charming Baltic city where medieval history meets modern city life. Explore the beautifully preserved Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, climb the historic city walls, and enjoy panoramic views from Toompea Hill. In summer time, don’t miss the midsummer night parties at the beach. Tallinn is the perfect place to begin an Estonia road trip because it gives you an immediate introduction to the country's history and atmosphere. The Old Town feels almost like stepping into another era, with narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, historic churches, hidden courtyards, and impressive medieval architecture. At the same time, Tallinn has a modern and creative side, with stylish cafés, restaurants, galleries, and design shops. One of the highlights is Toompea Hill, where you can enjoy some of the best views across the red rooftops of the Old Town. Walking through Tallinn is particularly enjoyable because many attractions are within easy reach of each other. You can spend the morning exploring historic landmarks and then relax in a café or walk along the waterfront in the afternoon. Tallinn also has a relaxed summer atmosphere. Long daylight hours make it possible to enjoy the city well into the evening, and the combination of warm weather and the Baltic Sea creates a wonderful holiday feeling. 👉 Join Max or one of his collegues for the great Tallinn walking tour 👉 I recommend the Hestia Hotel Europa located direct on the water front – Check availability Haapsalu Our next stop was Haapsalu, charming seaside town on Estonia’s west coast, known for its historic castle, wooden villas, peaceful promenade, and healing mud spas. Once a favorite summer resort of Russian aristocracy, it still has a relaxed, nostalgic atmosphere. I loved it. Haapsalu was one of those places that immediately felt different from Tallinn. Instead of the lively urban atmosphere of the capital, everything here seemed slower and more peaceful. The town is famous for its historic wooden houses, many of which give the streets a charming old-fashioned character. The castle is one of Haapsalu’s most important landmarks and provides an impressive reminder of the town’s medieval past. Walking around the castle grounds and through the surrounding streets is a great way to experience the history of the area without feeling rushed. The seaside promenade is another highlight. It is ideal for a relaxed walk while enjoying views over the water. Haapsalu has traditionally been associated with spa culture, particularly its therapeutic mud treatments, which helped establish the town as a popular summer resort. For us, Haapsalu was also a great place simply to slow down. After exploring Tallinn, it was refreshing to spend time in a smaller coastal town where there was no need to follow a busy sightseeing schedule. Pärnu County We had a great time in Pärnu County, a scenic region known as the birthplace of the Tori horse, Pärnu County combines coastal landscapes, forests, rivers, and rich equestrian heritage. The region is especially appealing for travelers who enjoy combining nature with outdoor activities. The landscape changes constantly as you drive through the area, from forests and open countryside to rivers and coastal scenery. It is an excellent part of Estonia to explore by car because you can stop whenever you discover an interesting viewpoint, village, walking trail, or peaceful stretch of countryside. Pärnu itself is known as Estonia’s summer capital, and the surrounding county offers plenty of opportunities to experience the more natural side of the region. The Tori horse tradition adds another interesting cultural element and reflects the importance of horses and agriculture in Estonia’s history. We particularly enjoyed the feeling of freedom that came with driving through this part of the country. There was no pressure to rush from one attraction to another. Instead, the journey itself became part of the experience. Tartu We continued to Tartu, which surprised us the most. Tartu is a lively university city known for its historic Old Town, vibrant cultural scene, and the prestigious University of Tartu. Tartu has a completely different atmosphere from Tallinn. As Estonia’s intellectual and university center, the city feels young, creative, and energetic. Students bring a lively atmosphere to the streets, while the historic architecture provides a fascinating contrast. Walking through the Old Town is a great way to explore Tartu. There are attractive squares, historic buildings, cafés, restaurants, and cultural institutions to discover. The University of Tartu is particularly important to the identity of the city and has played a major role in Estonian education and culture for centuries. What surprised us most was how much character Tartu had. It is not as internationally famous as Tallinn, but that is part of its charm. The city feels authentic and lived-in rather than designed primarily for tourists. We found it easy to spend time simply wandering around, stopping for coffee, and enjoying the atmosphere. For anyone planning an Estonia road trip, I would definitely recommend including Tartu in the itinerary. It adds a completely different perspective to the country. 👉 I recommend the Dorpat Hotel – Check availability Lake Peipus We drove through stunning, untouched landscapes along Lake Peipus, one of Europe’s largest lakes, to Narva, on the Russian border. This was one of the most scenic parts of our journey. The landscape around Lake Peipus feels remarkably open and peaceful. The lake itself is enormous, creating the impression of an inland sea in some places. The surrounding countryside is relatively quiet, with forests, small settlements, fields, and long stretches of road. The drive was not simply a way of getting from Tartu to Narva. It became one of the highlights of the trip. Estonia is particularly rewarding when explored by car because some of the most beautiful moments happen between the major destinations. The region also provides an opportunity to see a less familiar side of Estonia. Away from the main tourist routes, you can experience small communities and landscapes that have retained their traditional character. Narva The castle Hermannsburg, a magnificent 13th-century fortress above the Narva River impressed us. Narva’s history has been shaped by centuries of conflict and cultural exchange, with the castle standing opposite Ivangorod Fortress on the Russian side of the river. During our visit in May 24, the atmosphere was calm and relaxed. Narva was perhaps the most historically fascinating destination on our road trip. The city’s location directly on the border gives it a unique character, and the Narva River creates a striking natural and political boundary. The castle is an impressive sight and one of the best places to understand the strategic importance of Narva throughout history. Looking across the river toward Ivangorod Fortress creates a remarkable visual connection between two countries and illustrates how closely European history has shaped this region. Although Narva has experienced periods of conflict and major historical change, our experience was peaceful. We enjoyed taking our time, exploring the area around the castle, and appreciating the unusual atmosphere of a border city. 👉 I recommend the Narva Hotell & Spaa – Check availability Narva-Jõesuu Beach With the weather warm and sunny, we spent our last day on the Baltic coast. Narva-Jõesuu Beach offers endless sandy shores and shallow, pleasantly warm water. After so much sightseeing and driving, a relaxing day at the beach was exactly what we needed. Narva-Jõesuu is known for its long sandy coastline and peaceful atmosphere. The beach stretches for a considerable distance, so it is easy to find a quieter spot away from the busier areas. The shallow water makes the beach particularly pleasant during warm weather, and the surrounding coastal landscape provides a beautiful setting for a final day in Estonia. We walked along the beach, enjoyed the sunshine, and simply took the opportunity to slow down. This was a wonderful reminder that Estonia is not only about medieval towns and historic landmarks. The country also offers beautiful beaches and a surprisingly relaxing Baltic seaside experience. 👉 I recommend the Noorus SPA Hotel – Check availability Helsinki Back in Tallinn, we used the last day for a trip to Helsinki aboard the Tallink ferry, which takes you there in 2 hours, Helsinki is definitely worth visiting. The ferry journey itself was a pleasant way to finish our trip. After spending days exploring Estonia by car, it was nice to leave the driving behind and simply enjoy the views across the Baltic Sea. Helsinki feels different from Estonia but still shares some of the atmosphere of the Baltic and Nordic region. The city combines elegant architecture, waterfront neighborhoods, green parks, modern design, and a relaxed urban lifestyle. A day is enough to get a first impression, although you could easily spend several more days exploring. For us, the Helsinki trip was the perfect ending to the journey. Starting in Tallinn, traveling through Haapsalu, Pärnu County, Tartu, Lake Peipus, and Narva, and then returning to Tallinn before crossing the Baltic Sea created a wonderfully varied itinerary. 👉 My Helsinki Highlights here |
